# How to Play 8 Ball Pool: Tips and Strategies for Beginners
8 Ball Pool on Pokky Game is a full table with real ball physics, cushion bounces, and spin. You play standard 8-ball against the computer, or against a friend on the same device. Pot your group, solids or stripes, then finish on the black.
1. What Is the 8 Ball Pool Game?
It is a sports game of classic 8-ball billiards. Player one breaks. The table stays open until someone pots a ball after the break. That player takes the group they just potted, and the other player takes the group that is left.
You keep shooting while your own balls go in. Miss, and the turn passes. Clear your group, then pot the 8. Pot the 8 earlier than that, or pot it on a foul, and you lose. A foul gives your opponent ball in hand, so they can place the cue ball anywhere on the table.
2. How to Play 8 Ball Pool
Open the game and press Start Game.
- Aim. Move the mouse, or your finger, so the cue points from the cue ball toward the pointer.
- Set the power. Press and hold. The power fills to full in under a second. Release to strike. A very light release does nothing.
- Add spin. On the spin widget, tap high on the ball for follow and low for draw. Spin only takes effect when the cue ball meets the first ball. Follow keeps it rolling on. Draw pulls it back.
- Place the cue ball. When you have ball in hand, tap any clear spot on the table.
On a phone, aim with your finger the same way you aim with the mouse.
Example: The cue ball, a stripe, and a pocket sit in one line. Hold just long enough for a moderate shot, release, and the stripe goes in. The cue ball is still on the table, so you shoot again. If you also pot the cue ball, that is a scratch. Your opponent gets ball in hand.
3. Understanding the Rules of 8 Ball Pool
- Player one breaks. Balls that fall on the break do not choose the groups. The table is still open on the next shot.
- The first ball potted after the break assigns the groups. Solids for one player, stripes for the other.
- You keep the turn when you pot a ball of your own group. A miss passes the turn.
- It is a foul to pot the cue ball, to miss every ball, to hit the other group or the 8 first, or to make contact without any ball being potted and without a ball reaching a cushion afterwards.
- After a foul, your opponent places the cue ball anywhere.
- Pot the 8 after your group is clear and you win. Pot the 8 before that, or pot it on a foul, and you lose. Potting the 8 and the cue ball on the same shot counts as potting the 8 on a foul.
4. Beginner Tips and Strategies for 8 Ball Pool
- Use draw when the cue ball is likely to follow your ball into the pocket. Draw pulls the cue ball back after it hits, so a scratch is easier to avoid.
- A safe shot is legal when some ball reaches a cushion after contact. Rolling up to your own ball and stopping, with no cushion touched, is a foul.
- Leave the 8 until your group is gone. A shot at the 8 that also risks the cue ball can lose the game in one release.
- On an open table, pot the ball that leaves you a second shot. The group you take is the one you pot, so choose the cluster you can keep hitting.
- Play the computer when you want a solo game. Pass the device when a friend is on the same screen. The rules do not change.
5. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Holding the shot until the power bar is full on a short distance. The cue ball then follows the object ball into the pocket.
- Nudging your own ball with almost no speed and no cushion. That contact is a foul, and your opponent places the cue ball.
- Treating a ball potted on the break as your group. The groups are still unassigned.
- Hitting a stripe first when you are on solids, or hitting the 8 first while your group is still on the table.
- Going for the 8 while one of your balls is still out, or while the cue ball is on a line into the same pocket.
6. How to Sink the 8
Clear the last ball of your group first, and leave the cue ball somewhere you can see the 8. Then aim the 8 into a pocket and use draw if the cue ball would otherwise fall in behind it.
You do not need to pot the 8 on the first visit. A legal safe shot, with a ball reaching a cushion after contact, passes the turn without giving away ball in hand. Take the 8 when the pocket is open and the cue ball has a path that stays on the table.
